James Cameron‘s Aliens continues the story of Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor of the Nostromo in Alien. After spending decades adrift in space, she is rescued and enlisted to assist a team of Colonial Marines investigating a lost colony on a distant planet. Upon arrival, however, the mission quickly escalates into a large-scale confrontation with the Xenomorphs.
This film marks a shift in the franchise from contained horror to a more expansive, action-oriented style. The blue-collar characters are replaced by a contingent of space marines with big guns and a sense of group cohesion, and the action moves back to the planet. The colony environment is filled with corridors, industrial spaces, and fortified positions, which allow for tactical movement, coordinated action, and deadly encounters. The focus is on Sigourney Weaver’s performance as Ripley, whose determination to overcome her trauma gives the film its thematic identity.
Building on the key elements introduced in the first film in the Alien franchise, Aliens successfully merges science fiction, the style of a war film, and horror. It reconfigures the original premise into a large-scale confrontation, while retaining and amplifying the threat posed by the Xenomorph.
