Directed by Tim Burton, Mars Attacks! tells the story of an alien invasion that begins when a fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world’s major cities. While humanity awaits confirmation that the visitors have ‘come in peace’, a diplomatic exchange ends in the annihilation of the US Congress, prompting military leaders to call for full-scale nuclear retaliation.
Inspired by a 1960s trading card series, the film is a satirical homage to 1950s science fiction cinema, filtered through Burton’s stylised sense of humour. Drawing heavily on mid-century sci-fi aesthetics, from the design of flying saucers and ray guns to the exaggerated anatomy of the aliens, it favours camp and pastiche over realism. Bright, artificial colours, strong contrasts between environments and deliberately stylised destruction effects reinforce its cartoon-like tone.
Overtly tongue-in-cheek, the film exaggerates both violence and character behaviour for comic effect. Mars Attacks! moves between absurd humour and parody, using stylistic excess to critique classic science fiction conventions, as well as contemporary cultural and political institutions.
