Yasuzō Masumura‘s film The Blue Sky Maiden (Aozora Musume), based on a novel by Keita Genji, follows a cheerful young woman who, after being raised by her grandmother in the countryside, moves to Tokyo to live with her father’s wealthy family. Treated as an outsider because she is the daughter of her father’s former lover, she endures hostility and humiliation while remaining determined to discover the truth about her mother and preserve her optimism.

Subverting the Cinderella story, this vibrant and energetic film is shot in rich colours and features dynamic cuts and sweeping camera movements. Like its heroine, who defies family hierarchy, class expectations and legitimacy, it moves quickly and determinedly, never allowing itself to be slowed down by formalities.

The Blue Sky Maiden is utterly charming, replacing the tragic fatalism of traditional melodrama with the sunny, uncompromising self-determination of star Ayako Wakao. It combines the energy of a modern romantic comedy with subtle social critique.
