Directed by Kane Parsons and based on his science fiction analog horror web series inspired by a 4chan thread, Backrooms follows a failed architect who owns a struggling furniture store and who, unexpectedly, finds an endless labyrinth of abandoned office-like spaces inside his own store.
The film’s main visual identity is a maze of empty corridors with yellowish wallpaper, buzzing fluorescent lights, and wet, mildewed carpets. This was inspired by pictures posted online years ago, which prompted the director to develop his own mythos around them. The film explores the endless hallways of the Backrooms through wide-angle lenses and long tracking shots that navigate sharp 90-degree corners, all accompanied by the constant hum of industrial fluorescent light tubes.
Visually and atmospherically, Backrooms translates a now classic piece of digital folklore into a polished theatrical experience. It’s a fever dream of a maze, the stuff nightmares are made of.
